First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion “First Sacraments”
The sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion are central parts of the Catholic faith! We carefully prepare for and even celebrate the first time a child receives these beautiful Sacraments, but it’s important to remember that the word “first” implies that you don’t only receive these Sacraments once.
In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we acknowledge our sins before God and the Church, we express our sorrow in a meaningful way, we make some reparation for what we have done, and resolve to do better in the future. In return we receive the forgiveness of Christ and his Church and God’s abundant grace and mercy. No wonder people tend to walk out of the Sacrament with a smile on their face!
Catholics are required to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation at least once a year, but it is recommended (and generally a lot easier!) to receive this Sacrament on a monthly basis.
Starting with our First Holy Communion, we are privileged to receive the real and physical presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist every time we go to Mass, provided that our hearts and souls are prepared.
The Eucharist is not just a symbol. It is the actual Body and Blood of Jesus, which still retains the appearance, taste and smell of bread and wine. The Eucharist is a beautiful gift from God. Through it we receive God’s grace, have minor sins forgiven, grow more like Him and are more united to each other.
Catholics are required to go to Mass every Sunday (or Saturday evening) and every Holy Day of Obligation.
Children generally prepare for and receive these beautiful Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in Second Grade.
Parent Requirements for First Sacraments:
This is a really big Sacramental year with a lot of preparation, paperwork, events and communications to keep on top of.
The parish will need a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate early in the year as well as some other info to help keep you connected to everything that’s happening and to complete our records at the end of the year.
At least one parent needs to attend one Sacramental meeting in October and one in January.
Families should attend the Blessing of First Communicants in November, where children receive a special blessing and the opportunity to connect with a prayer partner during their time of preparation.
First Reconciliation is celebrated in March and First Holy Communion in April or May. A First Communion rehearsal the Monday afternoon or evening before First Communion is mandatory for the First Communicant and at least one parent.
The Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion as well as all parent meetings, rehearsals and Sacramental requirements and records are organized and implemented by our Children’s Discipleship staff. Details will be communicated to you throughout the First Sacraments year. Please prioritize these important dates and be especially attentive and responsive to all communications from Alicia Van Hecke ( ) and Shelly Buchan ( ). It can be helpful to add our emails to your contact list.
